Jagex announced the definitive cancellation of RuneScape: Reignited less than two weeks after its reveal at RuneFest, following immediate and fierce pushback from veteran players who feared a split community.
The project was unveiled earlier this month as one of the British studio's primary initiatives to attract newcomers to the long-running MMORPG. The concept revolved around a fresh-start game mode where participants would create brand-new characters inside a self-contained economy completely separate from regular RuneScape accounts. This meant Reignited players could only trade items among themselves and were barred from taking on boss encounters alongside traditional accounts.
Past mistakes and the fear of splitting the playerbase
The cancellation was delivered through an official blog post and an explanatory YouTube video featuring associate creative director Mod Ryan. The developer acknowledged receiving a vast array of community feedback and highlighted the team's commitment to protecting the trust of their existing audience.
In his statement, Ryan referenced one of the most turbulent periods in the game's history: the infamous combat overhaul launched over a decade ago. That structural shift alienated thousands of subscribers and took more than ten years of rebuilding to mend player relations. Ryan stressed that he had promised on stage not to repeat the mistakes of the past, standing by his word by pulling the plug on RuneScape: Reignited before causing lasting damage.
The core objection stemmed from dividing the community in two. Because Reignited offered an attractive clean slate, it was poised to siphon away all new blood, potentially starving legacy servers of the players needed to keep them active in the years ahead. Furthermore, Jagex provided no transition path to carry over existing progression. Veteran players who wished to take part would have had to discard years of memories, thousands of hours, and significant financial investment, leaving their original characters behind.
An inflated economy and remaining roadmap plans
Despite the fierce criticism, Jagex's original motivation addressed a very real dilemma. The in-game economy of regular RuneScape has suffered severe hyperinflation, making the climb to endgame content daunting due to astronomical market prices. By comparison, an in-game Bond (granting a month of premium membership) trades for around 11.2 million coins in Old School RuneScape, while on regular servers that price skyrockets to 141.3 million coins. Reignited sought to bypass that barrier, and its cancellation leaves Jagex facing the exact same structural hurdle.
Nevertheless, the studio emphasized that Reignited was not their only upcoming feature. Jagex confirmed that an Adventure Guide update and additional game elements are scheduled for this December alongside a free trial for curious players. Most notably, the team is actively progressing on RuneScape 4, an entirely new MMO that was also revealed during RuneFest.
