FromSoftware announced the temporary shutdown of servers for Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 across all platforms due to an unforeseen technical issue, leaving the community without online features indefinitely.
The Japanese studio confirmed the news via a brief statement on its official channels, detailing that the measure affects both installments regardless of system. This disconnection leaves players unable to summon cooperative allies, engage in intense player-versus-player duels, or read the iconic glowing messages left on the ground.
Direct impact on cooperative and competitive gameplay
The developer explained that the disruption is strictly due to a server issue, though it chose not to delve into the technical details behind the failure. As a direct consequence, the worlds of these two entries have been plunged into total isolation, forcing users to journey through their gloomy landscapes alone while maintenance continues.
With network services unavailable, hallmark franchise mechanics are completely out of commission. Gold and white summon signs have vanished, preventing newcomers from receiving assistance against formidable bosses. Similarly, dark spirit invasions are temporarily suspended, stripping away the constant tension that defines the series.
Even traditional community floor hints remain inaccessible. Those messages that warned of hidden traps, pointed toward illusory walls, or pulled cruel pranks suggesting players jump off cliffs will not appear until further notice.
In its statement, FromSoftware apologized to fans for the inconvenience and promised to provide updates as soon as they have concrete information regarding the restoration schedule for online play.
A history of technical hurdles across the franchise
This situation brings back memories of past incidents that disrupted the action RPG trilogy. Back in 2022, publisher Bandai Namco was forced to pull servers for all three main Souls games offline following the discovery of a security vulnerability that affected the third installment. During that period, complications lingered and the threequel went dark once again shortly after.
Network infrastructure issues have not been isolated to the classic trilogy either. The company's multiplayer-focused title, The Duskbloods, recognized for its blend of vampires and jetpacks, had to end its first network test ahead of schedule due to similarly vague server errors.
In addition to these server woes, the studio recently had to delay the exclusive launch of that same project for Switch 2, pushing its release window into 2027. According to the developer, while production is currently in its final adjustment phase, they made the decision to take extra time to ensure quality expectations are met.
For the time being, dedicated fans of the Souls series will have to rely solely on their Estus Flasks and individual skill while waiting for further official updates.
