We love to picture ourselves as fundamentally rational beings. After all, we call ourselves Homo sapiens, 'the thinking man,' and we tend to assume that every major decision — from which car to buy to who to vote for — goes through a cold, objective weighing of pros and cons. Modern evolutionary psychology, though, offers a far less flattering explanation of how our minds actually work: they didn't evolve to reason accurately, but to maximize survival and reproduction in ancestral environments very different from the one we live in today.
This idea, championed by key figures in the field such as Leda Cosmides and John Tooby, dismantles the myth of the brain as an impartial computer that processes information and reaches optimal conclusions. In reality, the human mind is a collection of adaptive mechanisms shaped over millennia to solve very specific problems faced by our ancestors: finding food, avoiding predators, choosing mates, or maintaining social alliances. Pure rationality wasn't necessarily the priority in that context.
This, according to this school of thought, helps explain why we're so prone to cognitive biases and to decisions that, in hindsight, look far from logical. It's not that we're 'broken' or thinking incorrectly by mistake — it's that we're running mental software designed for a completely different environment than the modern world, one overflowing with information, choices, and stimuli our ancestors never had to manage.
The mismatch between the environment we evolved for and the one we actually inhabit today sheds light on behaviors that would otherwise seem irrational: disproportionate fear of certain risks, or how easily we fall back on mental shortcuts when making everyday decisions. Our brains prioritize speed and practical effectiveness over strict logical accuracy, because for most of our evolutionary history, deciding quickly — even imperfectly — could mean the difference between life and death.
Accepting this view doesn't mean resigning ourselves to irrationality; it means understanding more clearly why we think the way we do. Recognizing that logic is just one tool among many, rather than the main driver of our minds, can be a first step toward making more conscious decisions — knowing that many of our impulses have roots that are far older, and far more pragmatic, than we'd like to admit.
