Sucker Punch Productions and PlayStation shared development details behind the return of Jin Sakai as a playable character in the Most Wanted mode of Ghost of Yōtei. The initiative made it possible to adapt the mastery of the Ghost of Tsushima to the combat system and technical fidelity of the new title set in the 1603 period.

The development team explained that the idea arose after seeing the great reception of Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition, where players enjoyed content like Echoes of Sekigahara and intense fights against Nobushige. However, community videos showing Jin Sakai clearing bounties inspired the creators to dive deep into the technical process required to bring him back authentically.

A Roguelike Model for Combat

According to Parker Hamilton, Lead Systems Designer at Sucker Punch, the core goal for Most Wanted was to create a new way to experience combat through a format focused on challenge and replayability. This idea quickly evolved into a class-based roguelike model, offering a chance to experience battle from perspectives other than main protagonist Atsu.

During early prototyping, the team tested other characters to evaluate production scope. It was during a conversation with Lead Combat Designer Ted Fishman that the team decided a partial implementation would not do Jin justice. Fulfilling the ultimate Jin fantasy required restoring all his stances, iconic sticky bombs, and signature combat mechanics into the sequel's systems.

Programmer Nate Slottow explained that remapping Jin's moves required reassigning over 60 attack animations to the new character skeleton. Many of these possessed custom finisher animations that needed rebalancing for Ghost of Yōtei. Powerful moves such as the Stone Stance Piercing Strike had to be adjusted so they would not overpower the game's balance.

Animations and Visual Improvements

The technical effort also included custom strafe animations created by animator Mark Wheeler to support the new focused attack model. On the gameplay balance side, unique perks like the Shaking Parry were introduced to inflict bonus stagger damage on successful parries, alongside the Swift Strike and its empowerable variant to chain melee strikes. The team even restored his connection to the wind and weapons like the Tanegashima firearm.

Visually, Mark Wheeler highlighted signature menu animations, such as Jin holding a bird in hand and a character select pose inspired by the cinematic moment he recovers The Storm of Sakai katana. For his outfit, original work by artist Emre Ekmekci was enhanced with updated metal, leather, and cloth textures, elevating Jin to match Atsu's visual fidelity.
