Garry's Mod creator and Facepunch Studios founder Garry Newman announced that his ambitious spiritual successor S&box will switch to a free to play model towards the end of the year after openly admitting that its initial pitch failed. Newman acknowledged feeling embarrassed by the mixed reviews on Steam and unveiled a major overhaul to transform the player experience.

The project was designed to succeed the legendary physics and sandbox toolset built on Valve assets, but its arrival failed to win over the community. In an extensive statement shared on Steam and the studio's official website, Newman explained that the team spent weeks rethinking what the platform ought to be. During that internal process, he concluded that the title lacked strong retention and genuine community support, taking full responsibility for the negative feedback.

A Major Shift Away from the Netflix Model

One of the main missteps highlighted by Facepunch Studios was attempting to organize the title like an instant catalog hub similar to Roblox. According to Newman, dropping users into a menu featuring dozens of games does not match how players actually discover good content, particularly after low quality games made with artificial intelligence tools flooded the platform early on.

The developer stressed that people discover games through organic recommendations, active multiplayer sessions, and streamers or content creators, meaning that striving to host the highest number of titles was the wrong direction. Consequently, the studio is moving away from focusing almost exclusively on the engine and developer tools to concentrate on the direct experience of regular players.

As part of this major overhaul, S&box will redirect its focus toward matching and surpassing the traditional Garry's Mod sandbox experience. The team plans to add more non player characters, driveable vehicles, full support for addons and customisation, and a top tier multiplayer suite. Additionally, the divisive cartoonish Citizen character models will be replaced with standard human models to shed the Roblox look.

Free to Play Transition and Rewards for Early Buyers

The move to a free to play format was always on Facepunch Studios' roadmap, but Newman chose to accelerate the shift before the end of the year. The primary objective is now to build an active player base rather than relying on an upfront purchase price, aiming to support the ecosystem through in game skin sales.

Players who already purchased the game will automatically receive exclusive Steam inventory items as compensation. Newman clarified that users who paid the full entry price will receive extra items compared to those who bought it at a discount. Through these changes, the British studio aims to rebuild trust with the PC community and begin closing the massive gap that still separates their latest endeavor from the cultural footprint of Garry's Mod and Rust.
