Mojang and Nintendo have announced the official launch of a native edition of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for release on October 27, 2026, including a free digital upgrade for existing owners.

The iconic sandbox survival adventure takes a technical leap forward with the integration of Vibrant Visuals, the largest official graphical overhaul created for the title so far. This technical update introduces a modern graphics pipeline with revamped lighting and shadow effects, delivering more vivid sunrises, realistic water reflections, and deeply shaded forests across its blocky landscapes.

These enhanced aesthetics will also apply to supported Marketplace creations. However, the developers specified that Vibrant Visuals will not be available in specific gameplay conditions, such as split-screen multiplayer or when loading certain custom Marketplace worlds and elements.

Save data transfer and Mario content

A critical highlight for returning players is the seamless continuity of their past achievements. Users who already spent hundreds of hours in the Nintendo Switch edition will be able to carry over their saved worlds directly into the new platform, letting them resume construction and survival right where they left off.

Furthermore, this native release comes bundled with the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, fully updated to run with Vibrant Visuals enabled. This themed expansion invites players into a custom world inspired by Mario's universe, adding fifteen music tracks and forty player skins drawn from the iconic franchise.

Multiplayer capabilities remain robust, supporting cross-platform play via a Microsoft Account to connect with community servers or private sessions of up to ten friends through Realms Plus. Up to four players can share a single screen locally, while local wireless and online multiplayer support lobbies of two to eight participants.

Free upgrade details and special editions

The publisher confirmed generous perks for those who already purchased the game digitally. Anyone owning a digital copy of Minecraft on Nintendo Switch can claim the digital Minecraft Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 completely free via the Nintendo eShop until January 31, 2027, at 9 AM PT.

Meanwhile, physical cartridge owners are also included in the transition promotions. Launching the original Nintendo Switch software on a Nintendo Switch 2 console between October 27, 2026, and January 31, 2027, will trigger an in-game prompt offering a discounted digital upgrade to Minecraft Ultimate Collection. The estimated initial download size for this enhanced version sits at approximately 1.2 GB.
