Game studios Evil Empire and Motion Twin partnered with Konami to develop Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, the franchise’s first original two-dimensional entry in 18 years, arriving October 15 on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC via Xbox Play Anywhere.
The adventure is set against the backdrop of Paris ablaze with magenta flames in 1499. The story centers on Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor Belmont and sorceress Sypha Belnades, familiar icons from the lineage and its popular animated adaptations. Trevor travels to Paris responding to the Bishop's call to officially pass the torch and whip to his daughter, establishing an interconnected fixed map that reclaims the roots of the genre the franchise helped define forty years ago.
Kinetic combat with seven weapon types and grappling hooks
Moving away from the procedural runs of Dead Cells, this partnership focuses on a handcrafted interconnected world while retaining the crisp pacing and responsive controls of modern action titles. Instead of baking 3D rigs into pixel sprites, the visual presentation employs cel-shaded 3D character models to produce an expressive graphic style, emphasizing dynamic backlighting, high-contrast silhouettes, and vibrant monster encounters.
Combat mechanics grant Rose seven distinct weapon categories: longsword, whip, gauntlets, spear, greatsword, sword and shield, and twin swords. Every option comes with a tailored move set to learn against legacy monsters and notable French historical figures. Hostile encounters emphasize telegraphed enemy windups, allowing players to execute parries that inject fresh momentum into traditional monster clashes.
Furthermore, the iconic Belmont whip now functions as a versatile grappling hook. Players can traverse gaps by latching onto environmental rings or grapple straight into foes across the room to close distances instantly with forceful strikes, turning standard traversal and combat encounters into a relentless forward assault.
Tarot arcana decks and captive boss spirits
Challenging boss confrontations test reaction times and pattern mastery across grueling multi-phase encounters. Overcoming these major adversaries connects directly with the tarot arcana deck left behind by Sypha. Defeated bosses yield distinct magical spells conceptually tied to their character, introducing bespoke arcane archetypes outside traditional Major Arcana tropes.
Upgrading these spells relies on a progression framework called Works of Mercy. Each card contains two to three specialized achievements tied to spell execution or environmental deeds. Fulfilling these objectives awards progression currency to amplify effects, including abilities like throwing a secondary cross boomerang.
Storywise, absorbing bosses frees them from Dracula’s control and traps their spirits inside Rose’s mind. These former enemies act as an ongoing internal commentary panel, offering grateful advice or taunting banter throughout the mission. In addition, arcana serve as investigative anchors through whispering statues and spirits, providing clues that prevent aimless wandering and build anticipation across the castle grounds.
