The PC community has achieved a major milestone by running native Windows versions of Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, and Gears of War: Judgment via static recompilation. The community project COGBox, developed by Shagg88, runs all three classic titles without traditional emulators, unlocking resolutions up to 5K and uncapped frame rates.
For more than a decade, PC gamers have begged for an official release of the original trilogy and its spin-offs. While Microsoft preserved them through Xbox backward compatibility on modern consoles, computer players were left with a major gap in their libraries. Earlier community initiatives such as Delta Online and New Hope showcased the massive passion for the franchise, but this new effort brings the three games together under one unified architecture without relying on standard emulation.
What COGBox brings to the table
Released in its first public build in late October 2026, COGBox is far from a cosmetic mod. Its creator utilized static recompilation to translate original Xbox 360 instructions directly into native Windows code. Powering the visuals is a custom renderer built on Direct3D 12, alongside experimental support for Vulkan.
This architecture grants these classics a wide suite of modern PC features that were impossible on the original hardware. Key additions include:
* Resolution and frame rates: Full support for resolutions up to 5K, custom render scaling, and the complete removal of the original 30 FPS cap.
* Upscaling technologies: Native implementation of NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, and Intel XeSS.
* Visual fidelity: SMAA antialiasing, HDR10 support, and native 21:9 ultrawide monitor compatibility.
* Modern input: Out-of-the-box support for mouse and keyboard, as well as Xbox and PlayStation controllers.
* Lower latency: Integration with NVIDIA Reflex and AMD Anti-Lag 2 on supported graphics cards.
* Local multiplayer: Working split-screen co-op for Gears of War 2.
* Content support: Compatibility with specific downloadable content (DLC), updates, and community mods.
Requirements and current development state
The current level of stability varies between each title. According to testing shared by the developer, Gears of War 2 is fully playable across all campaign chapters. Meanwhile, Gears of War 3 and Gears of War: Judgment are also playable inside the launcher, though players may still encounter occasional bugs or visual glitches given the project's early stage.
To run this software, users need a Windows PC and their own legally dumped copy of each game, either as a disc image or extracted folders containing the latest title updates. The utility contains no copyrighted game files and is not an official product from Microsoft or The Coalition, operating instead as a free open-source project hosted on GitHub.
