Funcom confirmed that the free Blood and Ice expansion for Dune: Awakening will launch on December 1, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox, introducing a frozen map with roughly 35 hours of progression. This content promises to transform the gameplay experience, forcing users to adapt to extreme weather conditions they have never faced before on the arid planet.

The Norwegian studio revealed that the open-world survival game is dramatically shifting the rules of the desert. While players were used to dodging scorching heat and seeking shade, this free update takes the action to the frozen north of Arrakis in a territory known as the Polar Sink. In this environment, heat becomes your greatest ally, and surviving freezing temperatures demands brand new gear, unique resources, and a complete rethink of boots-on-the-ground combat tactics. The game's atmosphere will feel more hostile than ever, forcing survivors to be much more strategic with their movements.

New Biomes and Survival Mechanics

The Polar Sink map is divided into two distinct biomes with unique challenges. Players first step into the tundra, where wealthy water shipper families protect lavish fortified strongholds. Beyond those outposts lies the heavily guarded ice cap, where securing access to ice becomes the primary objective for adventurers. Gear tailored for desert heat must be upgraded to withstand freezing cold, pushing survivors to gather exclusive local materials to craft specialized tools and defenses. This paradigm shift affects not only gear but also how players interact with the environment, as ice becomes a high-value strategic resource.

Harvested ice from these frostbitten lands will do more than protect characters, as it can also be brought back to player bases to cool down equipment and speed up production cycles. Blood and Ice additionally introduces fresh vehicle modules, augments, and specialization traits. According to the developer, the expansion offers around 35 hours of direct progression, with plenty of reasons to return thanks to valuable materials and upcoming content planned for the area. The depth of this content ensures that players have plenty to discover in the months following the launch.

Offline Play, Full Cross-Play, and Cosmetics

Alongside the expansion reveal, the team outlined several of the community's most requested features. In November 2026, an offline single-player mode will arrive, a request fans have made since the title's release. Later, in January 2027, players will gain the ability to copy characters between multiplayer servers and single-player games, while full cross-play will connect all available platforms. Funcom CEO Scott Junior emphasized that the studio has ambitious roadmaps for 2027, featuring multiple major free updates with new mechanics and zones, solidifying long-term support.

The planet's ongoing narrative will also expand through massive server-wide events. Following The Scourge, where participants investigated a spreading sickness, the Water Crisis event will launch shortly after the expansion, challenging survivors to secure scarce water reserves. A new dedicated Events tab will track rewards and milestones. Finally, an optional cosmetic store will debut with outfits inspired by Denis Villeneuve's Legendary Pictures films and vehicle variants, funding future free gameplay updates and ensuring sustainable development for the studio.
