The video game modding community has brought Super Smash Bros. Brawl to PC as a native application for Windows and Linux, running entirely without an emulator thanks to the static recompilation project BrawlRecompiled. This build introduces direct online multiplayer between players, ultrawide display support, and frame interpolation rates reaching up to 240 FPS.
Led by developer JosiahG, the project translates the original PowerPC code from the 2008 Wii release into C++ using the WiiCompiled toolchain. Rather than running inside an emulator like Dolphin, the software executes as a standard computer program, cutting down overhead and interfacing directly with PC hardware and portable systems such as the Steam Deck.
Visual upgrades and advanced technical features
Among the standout graphical features in BrawlRecompiled is the ability to scale internal render resolution up to eight times its original value, comfortably handling 4K and beyond. Players on ultrawide monitors can utilize standard 16:9 output or a window-filling mode supporting aspect ratios up to 32:9, which expands peripheral visibility across the arena while keeping menus and HUD elements properly proportioned.
While the original gameplay engine still operates at 60 FPS, the port includes a frame interpolation system active by default at 120 FPS, alongside toggles for 180 and 240 FPS. All visual and gameplay settings can be managed via an in-game menu rendered in Brawl's native aesthetic, opened by pressing F10 or the Home button on a gamepad, completely bypassing external launchers.
Additional quality-of-life tools include three distinct save state slots, game fast-forwarding between 2x and 4x speed, and rapid menu navigation. The controller layout handles any connected gamepad as a GameCube controller with fully customizable keybindings. Full keyboard and mouse setups are supported for all player slots, and original Wii Remote units can be connected natively via Bluetooth.
Online multiplayer and full mod compatibility
Online functionality in BrawlRecompiled supports rooms for two to four players. Matches can be hosted publicly or kept private using five-letter join codes, with additional room discovery across local networks and Tailscale. Networking relies on direct peer-to-peer connections introduced via a lightweight matchmaking server, eliminating the need for port forwarding. The netcode functions in deterministic lockstep, transmitting only controller inputs each frame and adjusting input delay between two and eight frames based on player latency.
Mod support is integrated directly through a virtual SD card folder structure. Users can load popular Wii overhaul mods such as Project+, Project+Ex, Super Smash REX, Brawl Minus, and Legacy XP. Overridden game modules and Gecko codes run through a built-in PowerPC interpreter at full speed, letting users easily switch between custom tournament builds and unmodded vanilla matches.
To play BrawlRecompiled, users must provide their own legally obtained Wii disc image in ISO, CISO, WBFS format, or as an extracted folder. The project is distributed as open-source software under the GPLv3 license and contains no copyrighted Nintendo game assets.
