Modder alejandrobujan released Battle Arena, a fan modification of Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2 for the Nintendo DS that eliminates menu navigation to jump straight into combat and adds brand-new unlockable characters.
This community project radically alters the pacing of the original 2005 dual-screen handheld fighter. Instead of navigating story sequences, prolonged transitions, or standard mode select menus, the project boots directly into the Free Battle team selection screen. The entire experience is built so players can assemble their squad and start brawling instantly without interruptions, returning immediately back to team select once the match concludes.
The core battle engine remains completely untouched from the original game developed by Cavia, preserving the distinct aerial gameplay and tag dynamics of the Nintendo DS release. However, its biggest hook is the addition of several new characters never before seen across the Supersonic Warriors franchise. These fighters are not handed out freely from the start, requiring players to earn them by winning matchups inspired by classic rivalries.
New characters and unlocking mechanics
The creator explained on the GBAtemp forums that unlocking the new roster additions requires players to win a match featuring specific fighters against particular computer-controlled opponents. As noted in his community replies, there is no stage restriction or mandatory one-on-one requirement, as long as the necessary characters participate on either squad regardless of team slot positioning.
While this initial launch strips out the story mode and traditional arcade ladders, alejandrobujan confirmed that arcade progression and multiplayer modes are on his roadmap for future updates. Community members testing the initial build have shared feedback regarding the inclusion of story-locked abilities, such as mid-battle transformations and team attacks, alongside requests for additional roster expansions from later sagas and movies.
Installation requirements and technical compatibility
To play Battle Arena, users must provide their own clean dump of the European release of Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2, identifiable by the game code ADBP. The developer hosts the patch files in xdelta format on his public GitHub repository, which can be applied using web-based utilities like Rom Patcher JS or standalone software like Delta Patcher and xdelta3.
Once patched, the resulting file runs natively via flashcarts on original Nintendo DS hardware as well as popular emulators such as melonDS and DeSmuME. The project is distributed under a CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, with the author actively gathering community feedback to polish stability and introduce further enhancements in subsequent releases.
