Middle-earth fans have reason to celebrate, as the acclaimed action games The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King now have native unofficial PC ports with modern graphics and performance upgrades.
For years, revisiting these 128-bit generation classics on modern computers required console emulation, a functional method that often demanded complex configurations to achieve stable performance. That landscape has now changed thanks to the dedicated work of independent community modders who brought both titles to native computer code.
Technical features in the Two Towers PC port
The standalone project focused on The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was created by modder Gumpolas. This unofficial port introduces a broad collection of enhancements designed to take advantage of modern PC hardware. Among its standout additions is full support for aspect ratios ranging from standard 4:3 up to 32:9 ultra-wide displays, adapting both cinematic cutscenes and in-game menus to fill the screen without stretching.
Graphically, the port allows players to increase internal resolution up to 12 times and offers rendering backends for Direct3D 11, Vulkan, and OpenGL. Players can enable anti-aliasing, custom color and lighting tweaks, and community HD texture packs. Furthermore, users can stick with the original 30 frames per second Xbox cap or unlock the framerate completely.
Control-wise, Gumpolas added native support for modern Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch Pro gamepads, complete with rumble and matching on-screen button prompts. Full mouse and keyboard support is also present, featuring custom key bindings, a dedicated walking key, and mouse navigation in menus and combat aiming. The port even includes restored archival content, such as the HUD from the ECTS 2002 demo, orange health pick-ups, and seven additional playable heroes.
Athelas and Return of the King support
Meanwhile, the community has also received an all-in-one launcher named Athelas, created by modder Shagg88. This free tool is designed to manage and run three releases: the Xbox version of The Two Towers, the original PC release of The Return of the King, and the Xbox edition of The Return of the King.
Athelas stands out by supporting framerates reaching up to 240 frames per second, widescreen displays, and full keyboard and mouse controls. It preserves cooperative multiplayer while integrating modern post-processing such as anti-aliasing, texture filtering, image sharpening, and direct support for custom HD texture packs, making it an accessible route for anyone wanting to play both classic hack-and-slash adventures in modern environments.
Both initiatives offer valuable preservation for two of the most celebrated movie tie-in games from the early 2000s, delivering high resolution and smooth frame pacing without relying on traditional emulation overhead.
