The video game industry is undergoing a major transitional phase where digital distribution continues to gain ground over traditional boxed copies. Amid this landscape, Nintendo has stepped forward to reassure its community of players and collectors. The Japanese company formally affirmed that it has no plans to abandon physical media across its catalog.

The statements come from a recent interview with the Coelho no Japão YouTube channel featuring Bill van Zyll, vice president and general manager of Nintendo Latin America. During the discussion, the executive addressed the company's stance regarding physical media preservation and consumer buying habits.

According to van Zyll, the company's historical approach has always been to remain "agnostic" about how users choose to consume software. Nintendo's main priority is to adhere to what consumers prefer and weigh that feedback heavily. In the executive's own words, the firm understands just how much fans appreciate physical copies, which is why phasing them out is completely off the table.

“Historically, we've been very agnostic, right? We go off of what the consumer prefers, and take that into account very heavily. We also have a platform that just launched. We're barely just over a year into Switch 2, and it's got both digital, but it also has physical, that capability. There's no plans to ditch physical. We know how much the fans like it as well, so our position has been to be agnostic,” van Zyll explained.

Nintendo's remarks arrive during an intense ongoing debate across the gaming space. Sony recently confirmed plans to stop producing PlayStation discs by early 2028, sparking widespread discussion about an inevitable all-digital industry transition. With PlayStation 5 heading into its sixth year on the market and setting the stage for a future console shift, its competitor's timeline mirrors a different stage in its life cycle.

In contrast, Nintendo Switch 2 has only recently surpassed its first full year on store shelves. With a dedicated community that heavily embraces cartridges, physical media shelves, and long-term collecting, the Japanese publisher sees no reason to mandate an all-digital landscape anytime soon. Consequently, prominent first-party titles and releases will continue to hit store shelves worldwide.

While Nintendo will undoubtedly monitor retail and digital sales trends in the years ahead, the official message provides peace of mind for cartridge enthusiasts: physical gaming remains firmly supported on Switch 2.
